The role of the Fire
Services in Karnataka has dramatically changed over the last
few years due to sudden changes in both urban and rural areas,
climatical changes, increase of man-made and natural disasters
etc. Modernization, in terms of construction of
multi-occupancy high rise buildings, software parks, hardware
facilities, excess usage of petroleum products, explosive
materials, plastics, LPG etc has increased the fire related
accidents. All these changes in the society have increased the
risk of both life and property on the one hand and new
challenges to the personnel of this department.
Apart from the fire and
fire related accidents, the department is also responding to
hazardous material incidents, advanced emergency medical
situations, high angle rescue and confined space rescue
incidents, trench collapse operations, underwater rescue,
natural disasters and man-made disasters.
Also, in the aftermath of
any disaster, the immediate mobilization
and deployment of trained personnel for search and
rescue operations is critical for the survival of the
disaster-affected victims. Thus the Fire Services in Karnataka
is developing as a multi hazard disaster response department.
Few general details about
some of the disasters are provided for general awareness
